China Expat – A Decade of Writing is a book containing articles about expatriate life and adventures in China written by Chris Devonshire-Ellis, Ernie Diaz, Josh Gartner and Graham Thompson.

Published in 2011 to mark the tenth anniversary of the popular “China Expat” portal, the book had an initial print run of 10,000 copies and was distributed free at celebratory events throughout China. Published in full colour, with many photos, the book is divided into five main sections:

  • Expatriates in China
  • Modern Chinese Life & Culture
  • Chinese Art & Traditional Culture
  • Historical Perspectives
  • Exploring China

It contains just under 50 of the most popular articles written by the contributors as they appeared online over that decade. The initial print run was exhausted within a month, following which the book was made available, as a gift free online to whoever wanted a copy.

Chris Devonshire-Ellis said at the time “This book represents the huge diversity of life and experience that China offers the expatriate, detailing laugh out loud moments, historical events, and aspects of Chinese culture as seen through Western eyes.”
